Virgin Gorda resort vacations - something really special
The island of 1,000 residents, best known to travelers for its deluxe Rockefeller-created resort, Little Dix Bay, offers other surprises. One is another luxury hotel, called Biras Creek, fortress-like in its isolation and renowned for its splendid cuisine. Also startling to the first-time visitor is ''The Baths,'' a jumble of Gargantuan boulders where the surging tide forms myriad secluded bathing pools. Around Virgin Gorda, the shores are scalloped with lovely beaches, some 16 by one count, screened from the roads by steep trails and thick stands of sea grape and tamarisk. There are echoes of history, a ruined copper mine said to date to 16th-century Spanish colonizers and, on the grounds of one hotel, five early gravesites. The same small hotel also boasts an extraordinary library, conceivably the finest private collection in the Caribbean, where guests and outside visitors with permission may browse among hundreds of rare first editions and hand- printed works assembled by the bibliophile- proprietors. For a small island, Virgin Gorda offers a bounteous choice of accommodations. Foremost is Little Dix Bay, which next year celebrates its 20th anniversary. When the 66- room resort was completed in 1964 by Laurance S. Rockefeller at a cost of $9 million - or something like $136,000 a room - it was said to be the most expensive hotel of its size ever built. Since then 16 additional rooms have been added. There is another lesser-known deluxe resort on Virgin Gorda, however. The Biras Creek Hotel, impregnable as any medieval fortress, covers a 150-acre estate on North Sound not accessible by road. Guests drive to the end of the road at Gun Creek and are picked up by a hotel launch that ferries them to the foot of a hill crowned by what looks like a stone castle, the hotel's main building and dining room. Yet Biras Creek hardly holds a monopoly on remoteness. Beyond lies the Bitter End Yacht Club with 22 rooms and 65 boats for the use of guests. The sailing-oriented resort also runs daily snorkeling excursions for non-guests. Nearing completion in the same wild region is the Tradewinds, a new resort of 20 cottages tucked into a hillside. Even farther out - so far it is on its own separate satellite island reachable by boat from Leverick Bay on the Virgin Gorda ''mainland'' - is Drake's Anchorage.
